Normally, when someone dies while sleeping, several codependent organ in their body have failed. Most often, heart failure and lung failure are to blame. One one of these organs fails, the other likely will in a short period.

When we think of our own mortality, dying in our sleep in old age often seems like the least frightening, and probably painless, way to go for many of us.

But dying in your sleep can happen at any age, often being a huge shock to friends and family, leaving many questions unanswered. So, why exactly do people die in their sleep? Are such deaths preventable?


Heart rhythm changes that trigger sudden cardiac arrest and the progressive loss of heart function associated with congestive heart failure (CHF) are chief among the medical conditions that are likely to  increase the risk of this death occurrence.


Also known as nocturnal death, dying in your sleep can also be due to unexpected event like a stroke, seizure, or a drug overdose. With an end-stage or terminal disease, dying in one's sleep is a possibility that may be anticipated.

In this article, i will expose the different reasons why people die in their sleep, including the some factors that increase the odds of dying of heart failure in your sleep. It also describes the medical conditions that can contribute to the risk of sudden nighttime death.


Everything described above can be called sleep paralysis which is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis may accompany other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an overpowering need to sleep caused by a problem with the brain's ability to regulate sleep.


The following are some of the common reasons why people die why sleeping at night:

1. Trauma

Severe brain trauma can also cause sudden death, often while a person is sleeping. Sometimes symptoms like nausea, persistent headaches, and dilated pupils may go unrecognized or be dismissed following a head injury.

Myocardial infarctions may range from minor events that slightly compromise function to catastrophic blockages that lead to cardiac arrest and death.

A massive heart attack can reduce blood flow to the part of the brain that controls breathing, leading to respiratory arrest (the cessation of breathing).

3. Nucturnal Stroke

In different parts of the world today, if someone dies in their sleep, people sometimes regard it as a "peaceful" means of death. But, it doesn't mean that it is any less distressing to loved ones who are trying to wrap their head around the loss or understand what exactly happened. This is especially true if someone died unexpectedly.


4. Chocking After drinking alcohol and goes to sleep.

It is also possible to choke to death while sleeping. This can occur if a person vomits during a nighttime seizure or after too much alcohol.

It can also happen if you fall asleep with food or a throat lozenge in your mouth and accidentally inhale it.
