As per the rule of nature, certain foods do not go with certain other foods. Therefore some combinations of foods can potentially harm your digestive system in particular and certain aspects of your health in general. Know what not to combine while planning your diet.
2. Lemon with milk
Milk is difficult to digest. When lemon is added to milk, we know it coagulates. Eaten together, these two can get mixed up in the stomach turning into acid and eventually becoming toxic food. Acidity and heart burn might result.
Lemon and cough medicine
Limes and oranges can block the enzymes that are required to break down statins and cough suppressants like dextromethorphan. If not broken down, the medicine can build up in the bloodstream thereby resulting in some side effects.
Mint and aerated drinks
Peppermint when taken before or after aerated drinks can produce toxic food that can even be fatal. Surprisingly, combined in the right proportions, they can form cyanide which is the deadliest of poisons.
Milk foods and antibiotics
The calcium, iron and other minerals in the milk products can bind antibiotics like Cipro. As a result, the antibiotics cannot be fully absorbed and therefore cannot effectively fight infections.
Meat and antidepressants
: Meat that has amino acid tyramine when taken along with medicines that belong to a group called monoamine oxidase inhibitors can lead to a sudden spike in the blood pressure which might be fatal at times.
Fruits and starch-rich foods
Foods digest very easily, but starchy foods like rice and potatoes take a long time to break. If fruits are eaten with starchy foods, they stay in the stomach for a long time and get fermented.
Chocolate and Ritalin
In addition to caffeine, there is also a stimulant called theobromine in chocolates. Therefore, chocolates cannot be broken down by the pets and chocolates are therefore harmful to dogs. In humans, eating chocolates with Ritalin can lead to seizures and strange behaviours.
Apple juice and allergy drugs
Avoid consuming the extracts from apples, oranges and grapes four hours before or after taking medicines like Allegra (fexofenadine), Synthroid, Cipro and Levaquin. The ingredients of these extracts can block the production of a peptide required to carry these medicines from the gut to your bloodstream. As a result, Allegra cannot be absorbed fully and therefore cannot prove effective.
Alcohol and acetaminophen
the enzymes required to digest alcohol and acetaminophen are just the same. Therefore a gap of at least six hours is needed in between taking these two.
Proteins and starch
You would have often heard people saying potato chips do not go with fried chicken. The reason is that the digestive processes for both these foods are entirely different. While the protein digestion happens in the stomach, starch is digested in the small intestine. During when the protein is digested, it can retain the starch in the stomach thereby turning the food toxic.
Foods rich in proteins and sugars
Sugar can act on the protein digesting enzymes there by reducing their performance. Therefore, when taken together, food takes a very long time to digest.
